My focus was not the best today -- second day of my period combined with a not-great night's sleep last night -- but I managed to muddle through and accomplish the following:
Work: Had another super-quiet day in the office – I got in, I did the morning credit card reports and check scan, I did the two obituaries that were in the paper, and then I proceeded to spend the rest of my time working my way through every instance of a specific name (trying to determine if any of them was the husband of a woman I’d discovered had passed recently – husbands and wives getting separated in our system occurs decently often) and doing various puzzles. *shrug* Not really anything else to say! I just have to get through tomorrow now – though they
are letting us out early (some religious group apparently needs our parking lot), so it will at least be a shorter slog!
Workout: Tonight’s stationary bike ride saw me pedal my way through –
A) The final 28-ish minutes of “Fallout 3: The Worst Wanderer - Part 24 - Operation Overlord” by Jon of Many A True Nerd! This portion of The Adventures Of Useless Steve, The Mauler And The Metal Blaster Really Prove Their Worth Edition, included:
I. Useless Steve getting the location of the kidnapped Big Towners from Bittercup – a police station north of the town – then heading toward Germantown Police HQ via Meresti Train Station to save them (or, well, the quest-important one anyway)! Slapping on his new Chinese Stealth Armor before he went because it was better to have
some stealth than
no stealth, no matter how noisy he was while walking around. And indeed, the armor did keep MOST things from noticing him as he trekked across the wasteland toward his destination – a bloatfly
kind of detected him, but never got a bead on him. Steve was thus able to reach the little maze of ruined corridors and whatnot that made up the front of the old police HQ and slip inside without too much trouble –
And then he rounded a corner, came across his first super mutants in the area – which were now Brutes instead of just bog-standard mutants, thanks to his fake level-up – and was immediately detected because the Stealth Armor can only do so much against Steve’s natural uselessness. :p Luckily, Steve had all the drugs with him and his Metal Blaster, and the application of the former to himself and the latter to the Brute meant that he took out the monster pretty quickly. Helped that Jon remembered to stand still this time! :p He then swapped over to Ashur’s Power Armor for the extra protection –
And, when the next Brute showed up with a sledgehammer, got out The Mauler and absolutely
tore through him and the other Brute around the back of the maze who was throwing grenades. Because The Mauler is a fucking piece of murderous beauty and if you own
Fallout 3 and all its DLC you
absolutely need to get it. *serious nod*
( It’s Useless Steve! Battling super mutants, being temporarily sciencey, and getting very lucky! )B) “Halloween: The Game | Fully Ramblomatic” by Second Wind/Yahtzee Croshaw! Featuring Yahtzee reviewing the newest asymmetrical multiplayer game based on an 80s horror movie, with this one featuring one player taking on the persona of Michael Meyers and the others the teenage victims who must avoid being stabbed. As Yahtzee was openly a fan of
Dead By Daylight and the now-defunct
Friday The 13th: The Game, it seemed like he should be a fan of this one too, right?
Wrong! Because, unfortunately,
Halloween: The Game suffered from some pretty glaring flaws, including:
I. Choosing to base the game on a movie that wasn’t really so much a
slasher film as a
suspense film – Mike apparently only kills like three people in the original
Halloween (Yahtzee refuses to give the sequels the time of day). The fear in
that movie comes from dealing with how mysterious he is and trying to figure out what his motivations are, which doesn’t translate well to asymmetric multiplayer
II. Setting the game in a suburb with NPCs – and making how many NPCs Mike kills vs how many the teenagers save the metric by which one side wins or loses. It doesn’t matter how many of the
actual players Mikey kills – so long as they save the majority of the NPCs, the teenagers shall win. And vice-versa – even if all the teenagers live, so long as Mikey murders most of the NPCs, the match goes to him. Which turned the game from, as per Yahtzee, “overly elaborate hide-and-seek” to “overly elaborate Hungry Hungry Hippos.” XD Which probably
could be fun, but that’s not why people play asymmetric slasher horror games, now is it? Really didn’t help that all the NPCs were really dumb, meaning that it was way too easy for Mikey to kill them while the teenagers had to deal with the idiots running into solid objects and shoving them around.
III. Making it so it was damn near impossible for Michael to actually kill the other players because, well, they could run away from him. Because Michael Meyers never runs, because he’s Michael fucking Meyers. XD The game
did give him a ghost form that he could zip around in, but unfortunately he wasn’t allowed to come
out of that ghost form on top of any potential victims, meaning he could never meaningfully catch up. Which I suppose made it a good thing that the actual way to win was by killing the dumb NPCs, but – again, not the reason people play asymmetric slasher horror games!
IV. And having a “single player mode” that was basically a dull-as-dishwater tutorial covering all of Michael’s various abilities and allowing the player to recreate various scenes from the movie. Yahtzee mentioned that he completed one of them by just hiding in the target’s car for five minutes. *shakehead*
So yeah –
Halloween: The Game was a real bust, at least from Yahtzee’s point of view. Not the successor to
Friday The 13th: The Game he was hoping for, and definitely not enough to lure him away from
Dead By Daylight. Shame, but it was fun to listen to him rag on it for roughly six minutes. :p
C) And, to finish things off, “Ryan Stiles completely lost it during this scene 😭😂 #shorts #whoselineisitanyway” by A Whose Line Is It Anyway Fan Page! A YouTube short featuring the Scenes From A Hat where they did “a brief glimpse into the dreams of Colin Mochrie,” and which included:
I. Greg Proops walking out and running his fingers through his hair with happily groaning noises before walking off like a raptor (since I’m pretty sure this is the one that featured Colin pretending to be a dinosaur during one of the rapping games)
II. After Colin got a sympathetic “aww” from the audience, Ryan beckoning Greg and Wayne onto the stage and all of them pretending to scream and cry over having gone bald (which has an extra layer of amusement these days since Wayne actually IS bald now – though I’m pretty sure it’s “deliberately shaved my head” bald)
III. And Greg walking back out pretending to smoke a cigarette and declaring, “Yeah, you were great, Sharon Stone. No, I’m not gonna call you” (this one made Colin laugh XD)
Fun times! Though I don’t understand the title at all – the title on the video itself, “Whose Line Did Colin Wrong On This One,” made MUCH more sense. O.o Methinks there was a copy-paste error somewhere...
Writing: Sadly, my brain stalled out tonight when it came to trying to actually
write a fic, so I didn’t make any progress there on my Polyship Week 2026 prompts. :( I did, however, manage to come up with some basic outlines for fics that I should be able to use as jumping-off points in the days ahead, which included –
A) Deciding Day Two, “Movie Night,” should be a Running Headlong Into The Bullshit (AKA feature the mega-polycule with Victor, Alice, Smiler, Victoria, Emily, Christopher White, Richard Hatter, Preston Garvey, and Piper Wright) fic! It’ll probably be one of those “everybody in the group chat” fics that I’m so fond of, with the group deciding on a movie or two to watch – and, to make it easier on myself, I will probably have Smiler spin a wheel they’ve set up and have everyone choose a Classic 80s Movie to recommend. Because I know those movies best. XD
B) Deciding Day Three, “Realizing Polyamory Is An Option,” should be a Multiplayer Wonderland (the “Victor and Smiler get sucked into AMA while visiting Alice in the asylum, then they PLUS Victoria and Emily get sucked into A:MR halfway through
Corpse Bride” universe) fic! With Alice, Smiler, Victoria, and Emily finding Victor during a sequence where he’s stuck in a pitch-black room from his worst nightmares, and realizing part of what’s tormenting him is the fact that he’s developed feelings for all of them despite
knowing he has to marry Victoria...and then realizing that they don’t particularly
want to make him choose, because
they’ve all grown so close. Because it’s the clearest scene I have in my head for that prompt, and it
would be nice to do something from the time period of the actual adventures in Wonderland.
C) And coming up with an idea for the Day Seven, “Forced Proximity” fic, which I’d already decided should be set in my Valicer Severance AU – namely, one of the three (most likely Victor) wondering if it’s only the fact that they’re kind of forced to be together all the time that led to them falling in love...then deciding that no, if they’d met each other normally, they still would have at least liked each other. And possibly feeling vindicated when the Outies also get together (though that in itself involves forced proximity with the Outie!Valicer trio being around each other a lot thanks to being on the run, so – we’ll see).
So that’s not nothing. Hopefully my brain is more cooperative tomorrow, though!
Other: The weather was quite nice this afternoon, so my parents and I ventured out to the backyard once I got home to play some beanbags – and I am happy to report that today was very equitable indeed, with everyone coming first once, second once, and third once! :) We like when things work out that way. Final scores were me 3-W-2; Dad W-2-3; Mom 2-3-W – we’ll see how things shake out tomorrow (as it’s supposed to be another lovely day, and with me getting home early, I’m sure we’ll play).
*shrug* I guess that's not bad, especially for the second day of my period. But I'm hoping tomorrow is better -- and that means getting to bed at a better time for a start. Night all!
